Post MV Scratch
So, I was talking with ZACsized over IM earlier, seeing if he could help me with a question I had about my audio studies. Though unable to help me, I thank you ZACsized for trying. Anyway, after that, the following conversation ensued:

Quote:
Me: $10 says I will be quite helpful to you once I finish this class
ZAC: Oh really?
Me: it is a basic audio production course
ZAC: Ooh.
ZAC: That could be very helpful. XD
Me: assuming I make it out alive and with a decent bit of knowledge, and assuming you can come to GMX as well as MTAC 2011…. would you be interested in working with me to develop a recording panel/workshop?
ZAC: Absolutely!

I would try to submit these for this year's MTAC, if it was not late now. Well, that and the fact that I won't have a decent knowledge of things till MTAC 2010. So, it will have to wait till at least GMX.

But seriously, would anyone be interested in this. When I say the workshop will cover DIY Production on the cheap, I mean as cheap as inexpensive as you can get and still be able to do everything on your own. Yes, I will show how you can use Mac to do this, but I will also show some PC options as well.

So who would be interested? And does anyone else here have a good, solid, background in both digital audio production?

I would be interested, my background in Digital Audio is limited to stuff that cost more than my car. So learning about stuff that I can own without buyers remorse would be handy.

I would love to know what kind of mixers are cheap and decent. I am going to have to replace my Yamaha 10/2 this year (it is goning crackly and I cant do the pencil soldering I need to do to fix it) and I was hoping to upgrade it to something newer.

Well, we are dropping video from the panel for two reasons, the cost of setting up a digital video workstation is really high, and I rather not try to stuff that much material into the panel.

So, I know for a fact there are many forum members who in some fashion are musically inclined. Most that I know of play some sort of instrument, such as guitar. As such I would like to use this panel as a means of introducing those interested into digital audio production techniques and how they can enhance your abilities as a musician. If for no other reason, the one thing this panel will help you do in terms of the technology side of DIY audio production, it will show you how you can use a computer to enhance and expand your music from just one or two instruments to hundreds if not thousands. Though I am not advocating one package over the other, I can say that out of the box, Logic Studio comes with over 20,000 instruments and over 4,500 plug-ins and presets for said instruments. Some of those plug-ins and presets include a library of virtual amps and stomp boxes. Logic is not alone with this type of vast library, as may other software packages, such as Pro-Tools, can use similar libraries as well.

As such, to help give you all a small taste of just a portion of what this panel will offer, I invite you to subscribe to my audio blog and my blog on my website (Audio and Blog respectively) at http://web.me.com/benyamin.schlein/.

Oh, I dropped Digital Video from the vote options, so if you already voted you will need to vote again as we are dropping video from this workshop for reasons stated earlier.

I also at this time invite Devi and ZACsized to please explain what they will bring to the panel.

I am sorry, I must have misstated myself. I am interested in attending, not presenting. If you need help presenting I am much more of a video guy, but have done work as a audio tech. My kit is currently rented out but if it is free for GMX Id gladly bring it around. It is just your usual recorders and mics though I was told I need to upgrade my four channel recorder to a PD606 but I cant for the life of me listen to eight channels on a the fly. I have enough trouble with three, let alone four. I should know if Ill have the kit in a few weeks - company wants to rent it for a shoot in South Africa.

What I know is not on the pennies, so I would love to know more stuff I can buy and use at home when the kit is gone for six months or so.

I'm not too experienced in many of the high grade professional recording and mastering programs, as I usually go for the cheapest and most convenient route for me as a guitarist. As such I'll mostly stick to the hardware side of things for now. I can give a rundown on which mixers and input devices give you the best bang for the buck, including proper ways to mic amps and drums if anybody is interested.. it all depends on what route JMY has in mind for the panel. I guess other then that I'm just there to answer questions and assist JMY and Devi. =P

Devin and I talked this over and due to what it really is, we are actually considering adding vocaloid to this panel.

Post Re: DIY Digital Audio Production for pennies.
My apologies for the double post.

Anyway, so I have decided to be fair and complete in the recording and editing side of this panel options for both Windows and Mac will be done.

For Windows, Digidesign's Pro-Tools will be featured with Digidesign's M-audio hardware as the supplementary audio interface. Not that I am trying to sell Digidesign product, but Pro-Tools really only works with M-Audio or Digidesign Hardware.
For Mac, Apple's Logic Studio will be featured, with Apogee serving as the supplementary audio interface.

Pro-Tools works on both Windows and Mac; however, both Pro-Tools and Logic are currently the two major players in the audio editing world, so both will be covered.

Also to be covered will be the following:
  • Microphones and Monitoring Devices (Speakers and Headphones)
  • Midi Interfaces
  • Control Surfaces
  • Audio Loops
  • Effects and Plug-ins
  • Virtual Instruments
  • Recording Live Insturments
  • Other Suplementary Audio Interfaces (if time allows)

We will be doing live demos of systems and setups during this panel. Also, Devin and Zac will cover material that relates to live performances and setups. I will leave it to them to fill you in with a summary of that.

I want to make something clear also, this panel is designed for people who have no recording or performing experience. Though I admit knowing how to play a musical instrument would be helpful, it is not required. What is required is a basic understanding of how to use a computer and how to play music on a stereo.

Post Re: MV Scratch
Okay, first sorry for the triple post, but this is a significant edit.

To make the material in this panel more approachable for all skill levels, it will be done from the POV of someone wanting to, still inexpensively, create custom music and Jams for their AMV's/GMV's/MV's

Not that there is anything wrong with using off the shelf tunes, but being able to write your own jams for AMV's can give you amazing flexibility and power in your AMV soundtracks.

Though we will still cover much of the above mentioned equipment; instead of saying you need all of that, we will show you how and what to select via an ala carte method to fit your needs, thus making it easier to keep costs down and under control.

This panel assumes you already have a finished and edited MV of some form ready to ad sound to, or at the very least have an idea of what show/game/movie you want to use.

Likewise, if you just want to make your own jams, this panel will still teach you how to do that.

Post Re: MV Scratch
So after meeting with a few people at MTAC, MV Scratch is going to be a new and revolutionary panel to teach attendee's techniques and equipment baics to make an entire Music Video of any type from scratch, save for stock footage. This means everything from recording your own audio and video to editing it all together to produce a professional looking product.

As it stands now, for this panel, we have.
Devi-Kun
Gajin-Tenshi
Chris From the Man Power
Zacsized
Fastbilly1
JMY (me)

I have also arranged for two of my, now former, professors to consult on the material for the panel.
